Closing a Critical Gap in Maternal Monitoring During Cesarean Birth

Why earlier, proactive detection of hemodynamic instability can support faster intervention and improved care for mothers during cesarean delivery.

Bringing a child into the world should be one of life's most joyful moments. Yet for too many women, complications during childbirth can quickly become life threatening.

The good news is that technology already exists to help clinicians detect subtle changes in blood pressure and hemodynamic status before they become more serious concerns. By providing a more continuous view of a mother's condition, these innovations can support earlier recognition and faster intervention when every moment matters. As cesarean births continue to rise around the world and are expected to account for nearly one-third of deliveries by 2030, having the right information at the right time is becoming increasingly important.

In a recent BD white paper, “A Call to Action: The Need for Enhanced Maternal Hemodynamic Monitoring in Cesarean Birth,” we highlight a critical gap: the ability to detect and respond to hemodynamic instability early enough to make a meaningful difference.

Today, monitoring during cesarean birth often relies on intermittent blood pressure measurements, which can miss rapid physiological changes and delay recognition of deterioration.

Closing this gap requires a shift from reactive to more proactive approaches. Emerging evidence suggests that more continuous insight into a patient’s hemodynamic status may support earlier detection of instability and more timely intervention.

Improving maternal outcomes will depend on earlier detection, better visibility into physiological changes, and faster clinical response. Strengthening monitoring during cesarean birth is an important step forward.
