Contributing to Humanity through Medical and Biological Engineering: BD Innovator Inducted to AIMBE College of Fellows

Medical and biological engineering bridges the gap between healthcare and technology, enabling the very innovations central to advancing the world of health™. At BD, medical and biological engineering spans our entire product portfolio, impacting everything from delivery of care for patients to biosciences discovery.

Recently, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) inducted Eric Diebold, Ph.D., VP/GM Instruments, Software and Informatics, Biosciences at BD to the AIMBE College of Fellows, Class of 2025, for his pioneering contributions in advanced photonics, high-speed imaging, and flow cytometry to transform the study of human cellular biology.

Induction to the AIMBE College of Fellows is among the highest professional distinctions and Fellows represent the top two percent of the medical and biological engineering community – across academia, industry, clinical practice, and government.

“AIMBE is the leading voice in medical and biological engineering and their Fellows – which include Nobel Prize and Presidential Medal of Science winners – are at the forefront of driving innovation in the field to improve the healthcare and safety of society,” said Joe Smith, MD, Ph.D., SVP and Chief Scientific Officer at BD, and the AIMBE Fellow who nominated Eric. “Eric Diebold is well deserving of the distinction, demonstrating a remarkable track record of commercializing innovation in the life sciences and developing the ideas, products and people that can truly transform science and health.”

Since joining BD in 2017, when his flow cytometry technology startup was acquired by BD, Eric has led innovation work on many fronts, including bringing to market the new-to-world BD FACSDiscover™ S8 Cell Sorter with its breakthrough BD CellView™ Image Technology and BD SpectralFX™ Technology. The BD FACSDiscover™ A8 Cell Analyzer, which launches soon, will expand on these innovations to serve an even wider range of scientists and experiments.

“Induction into the AIMBE College of Fellows is a tremendous honor that reflects not my work alone but the collective efforts of the many great mentors, like Joe Smith, colleagues, and collaborators who have shaped my journey at BD and across my career," said Eric. "Joining this community is more than a recognition of past contributions, it is a call to continue innovating, advocating, educating, and inspiring the next generation of leaders in medical and biological engineering for the betterment of humanity."

A formal induction ceremony was held during the AIMBE Annual Event in Arlington, Virginia on March 31, 2025. Eric is only the sixth BD associate to become an AIMBE Fellow. He joins John A. DeFord, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer and Executive VP, BD (Class of 2006), Joe Smith, MD, Ph.D., SVP and Chief Scientific Officer, BD (Class of 2007), Bob Hoffman, Ph.D., BD Fellow, Advanced Technology (Class of 2007), Gerrit van den Engh, Ph.D., VP of Advanced Cytometry (Class of 2008), and Noel Warner, Ph.D., Worldwide VP, Scientific Affairs, Biosciences (Class of 2013).
